When you eat cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and similar green leaf vegetables, our stomach acid breaks them down and produces indole-3-carbinol which produces 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM).
DIM increases estrogen activity. When testosterone is adequate or high and estrogen is relatively low as seen in
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Post-competition metabolic damage
- In female athletes with low body fat and low estrogen level
DIM will bind and activate estrogen receptors to increase estrogen activity while blocking the androgen receptors to decrease testosterone activity.
DIM can help to alter estrogen detoxification pathways to increase the production of the 2α-hydroxyestrone and block the production of the 4α-hydroxyestrone and 16α-hydroxyestrone to aid in the treatment of estrogen dominance.
High doses of isolated pure DIM can saturate tissues and block androgen (testosterone) receptors and inhibit the protein synthesis induced by the anabolic effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.
